Sino-US joint expedition in Tibet recently found a number of various types of glaciers on Himalayas and Mt. Gangdis.
This expedition group, consisting of more than twenty scientific staff, started on 13th, August. On their way from Lahsa to Himalaya glaciers, scientists saw a large variety of glaciers, such as cirque glaciers, valley glaciers, flat ice cap, and piedmont glaciers. On top of those, they also caught sight of many icy waterfalls in that region.
Porf. Yao Tandong, team leader and director of ITP told reporter so on the phone. He also added that this was the first time for scientists to find such a large scale of glacial varieties in this region. He projected them to be the result of Tibetan unique landscaping and climatic environment.
Prof. Lonnie Thompson, world famous palaeo-glaciologist and American chief scientist is also in this group. He cited global warming in the retreat of world glaciers early in the scientific community.
This expedition is to end in the middle of September.
