CCTV: Rongbuk glaciers experiences obvious thinning

On May, 19th, 2005, CCTV reported of the scientific exploration of CAS to Mt Qomolangma, where scientists found out obvious thinning and retreat of the Rongbuk Glaciers.

In the past two to three hundred years, the frontal loss reached as much as two kilometers. According to Prof. Kang Shichang, team leader of the exploration group.

He told the reporter that in the past forty years, the thinning of the glacier totaled thirty to forty meters, indicating a fast glacial retreat. He also warned that the large amount of water produced from the melting would in the long run threaten the water resource and the ecological environment in the lower elevation of Mt Qomolangma.
