ITP Prof.LIANG Eryuan was invited to participate in the 8th international tree-ring conference at Rovaniemi, Finland, during Jun 13-18, 2010, and to host a session titled “Shrub Tree-Ring Ecology”.
The conference, held every four years and considered the most advanced level in tree-ring research community, is jointly hosted this year by the Association for Tree-Ring Research, Tree-Ring Society, International Union of Forest Research Organizations Working Groups 4.01.04 and 5.01.07, and University of Lapland.
About 20 Chinese tree-ring researchers attended the conference, giving 14 oral presentations and 6 poster presentations to introduce China’s tree-ring research in North China, as well as on the Tibetan Plateau. Their research achievement was widely approved by the international counterparts, arousing intense interest.
With global warming intensifying, tree-ring study is confronted with new challenges, calling on new approaches and technology to assess forest security and tree growth on both broader spatial and longer temporal scales. Study of shrub tree-rings on the Tibetan plateau thus contributes to a holistic understanding of the paleo-climate on the plateau by tree rings.
