In the latest release of a transition team list by International Council for Science (ICSU), CAS academician, Prof. YAO Tandong, was elected together with 16 other well accomplished scientists. These 17 newly elected members will constitute a transition team for a new initiative promoted by ICSU.
This new initiative is a 10-year research program called Earth System Research for Global Sustainability. It reflects ICSU’s far insight in face of climate changes and associated environmental challenges for social sustainability. The “Transition Team”(TT), a new body to govern the transition phase from design to implementation of the new intiative, was proposed in February, 2011. It started nomination and recommendation of scientists worldwide since then, and was formally established in late May this year. The first meeting of the TT will be held in June 22-23.
As a member of the TT, Prof. Yao, on behalf of Chinese scientific community, will work with the 21 other scientists to oversee the creation of the Initiative, to take the lead on the Initiative’s vision, strategy, fund-raising, and relationships with partners and stakeholders, until a permanent governing body is appointed.
He earns his position in the TT with his own serious research attitude and personal charisma. His nomination in the esteemed international science council also demonstrates the emerging power of China. Congratulations to Prof. Yao!
