Invited by ITP Prof. ZHANG Fan, associate Professor YE Ming of Florida State University visited ITP Beijing on May 25, 2012, to conduct academic exchanges.
Entitle “Quantification of predicative uncertainty in subsurface environmental modeling,” the talk given by Dr. Ye covered some sample studies of models in geology, geochemistry and hydrology, as well as possible causes behind uncertainties of parameters and models. He focused his talk on tackling some important issues in uncertainty analysis such as wide targeted space, nonlinearity of computer inputs/outputs, necessity to identify pretext in adopting the Bayesian approach. He also addressed possible difficulties brought about by large calculation demand and calculation of model statistics, and how to calculate the model statistics using the Bayesian model.
Dr. Ye is currently the associate editor of Water Resources Research. In 2012, he won the Early Career Award by the US Department of Energy, and was elected fellow of the American Geological Society.
