Glacial lakes under continuous monitoring in southeast Tibetan Plateau


SETORS has conducted in situ monitoring and observation of some selected glacial lakes in southeast Tibetan Plateau since June, 2010, given the rapid retreat of glaciers with recent warming on the Tibetan Plateau, esp. in the southern and southeastern parts, to better understand the state of glacial lakes in the southeastern Plateau.

Five glacial lakes under investigation are respectively Cuomujiri, Jieyueshiye in Nyingchi County, Gawalong in Medog County, Guangxie Co in Bomi County, and Gangrigabu in Baxoi County. Scientific staff at the SETORS overcame the difficulties of remoteness, high altitudes and harsh weather conditions, and managed not only to measure the water depths, water levels and water temperatures of Gawalong, Guangxie Co and Gangrigabu, but also investigate the geological environments of nearby moraine dams and surrounding geomorphology.

 They also tried to calibrate those in situ measurements with related multi-temporal high-resolution of satellite imageries to further facilitate  academic research in concern. These basic data and surveys are valuable for evaluating the hazard potential of glacial lakes and will provide solid scientific basis for studying the variation of glacial lakes on the Tibetan Plateau under climate warming.

Such a project for continuous monitoring of glacial lakes was driven by potential hazards posed by glacial lake outburst floods with the formation and expansion of a large number of glacial lakes on the Tibetan Plateau, in particular in the southeastern part. Advancement in relevant glacial lakes’ research is believed to be conducive to Tibet's social and economic sustainable development.
