Dr. Alan Basist, Senior Scientist at Weather Predict Consulting Inc., U.S. affiliate of Renaissance, United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), is visiting ITP on June 10, 2010. He will report on his study with microwave remote sensing in surface modeling. Prof. YAO Tandong will preside over the talk.
Primarily responsible to develop crop yield models and to maintain and improve the procedures that translate microwave satellite signals to surface wetness and temperature products, he has rich experience in the application and analysis in this respect. He used to serve as a Research Meteorologist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration at the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), where he used data from the AVHHRR, MODIS, and SSMI satellite instruments to develop products useful in climate monitoring and analysis. He was also one of the founding members of the rapid response team that prepared reports on the state of the climate for the White House and NOAA headquarters press releases. Prior to his position at NCDC, he was a remote sensing specialist at the Climate Prediction Center (CPC, NOAA) maintaining a real time archive of satellite measurements and collaborating with NESDIS scientists to develop new satellite products for climate monitoring.
