TEL 94th academic frontier lecture this Friday!

Invited by TEL Prof. MA Yaoming, Prof. Massimo Menenti of Delft University of Technology, Netherlands, is visiting ITP this Friday and will give a talk to share his latest achievement in studying hydro-meteorology interactions.

Title: Observing the terrestrial water cycle on the Qinghai – Tibet Plateau from space: highlights of the CEOP-AEGIS project

VenueMeeting Room 915, ITP office building

Time: 3.00 pm, Friday, September 27, 2013

Abstract:

Time series of hydrological observations of all terms of the terrestrial water balance have been generated using a very broad suite of satellite data, combining active and passive measurements across the entire EM spectrum. Each data product has been evaluated against ground measurements, then used as input for a hydrological model over a domain including the entire Plateau and the headwaters of all the major rivers of South and East Asia at a 5 km x 5 km spatial resolution. The calculation of daily river flows over the entire domain proved very useful towards identifying inconsistencies in the satellite data products and lead to further improvements. The same data were used to evaluate the linkages between large area patterns in surface wet-dry conditions in relation with convective processes and regional atmospheric circulation.
